Anderson moved, seconded by S. Lesik, to approve the minutes of the February 4, 2009, meeting. Motion carried unanimously. Old Business Awareness Campaign on Universitys Smoking Policy Committee members discussed details related to the planning of an awareness campaign on the universitys smoking policy during the beginning of the fall 2009 semester to address ongoing concerns about people smoking near building entrances. N. Glagovich stated he would like to have the following student clubs assist with the campaign: Biology, Chemistry and Caducean (for those interested in medical careers). The awareness campaign will take place September 1st through the 4th (rain date: September 7th through the 11th). N. Glagovich suggested that over the course of the week, main entrances to campus buildings would have an arc marked off in chalk extending 25-feet from the building to indicate the smoke-free area pursuant to CCSU's Smoking Policy. In addition, the student volunteers could write anti-smoking messages in chalk within the marked off areas. Based on R. Bachoos suggestion, N. Glagovich will contact Event Management regarding this event that will be sponsored by the Safety & Health Committee. L. Dunn suggested that a unified message be created for the campaign and publicity be sent out to faculty, staff and students prior to the start of the campaign so that the campus community would be aware of the campaign. The message could encompass both CCSUs Smoking Policy, as well as the anti-smoking theme. L. Dunn offered to work with N. Glagovich on the marketing piece of the project. L. Dunn will also look into a small amount of funding for the campaign to purchase materials. New Business Discussion of Future Meeting Times Chairperson Karas-Johnson noted that historically the Committees meetings have been held at 12 noon (or 12:30 p.m.). and asked if any members had a preference to move the meeting time away from the lunch hour. The meeting time has worked well for most; however, Chairperson Karas-Johnson will look into moving future meetings to 11 a.m. if possible, so they will not occur at lunch time. In the near future, Chairperson Karas-Johnson will be sending out meeting dates for the fall 2009 semester. Review of Email Received AEDs Across Campus Chairperson Karas-Johnson reviewed the single email that had been sent to the Safety and Health Committee mailbox. The email asked about the dissemination of AEDs (automated external defibrillators) to various buildings on campus. Chairperson Karas-Johnson reported that AEDs are currently located in: each Police cruiser, Health Services (Marcus White Annex), and Kaiser Hall. R. Bachoo reported that due to the current budget concerns it will be a while before additional AEDs are disseminated across campus, but it will occur in the future. The priority for distribution of AEDs will be those buildings that serve as large venues (e.g., Student Center, Welte Hall, Torp Theatre and Copernicus Hall). He noted there is more to this project than just mounting AEDs within a building. Systems will have to be in place to notify the Police when an AED is removed for use, so that they can respond with assistance. Chairperson Karas-Johnson stated that she had responded to the email on this subject. As May Arise Use of Pesticides on Campus S. Lesik noted that pesticides had been used on campus this week and they left a strong odor. R. Bachoo was aware of the spraying of pesticides in some campus locations over the past week. He will check to see why the odor was still lingering. Committee Members Who Do Not Attend Meetings B. Albert asked if there is anything that can be done regarding committee members that never attend meetings. Chairperson Karas-Johnson will check into this and, if necessary, check whether or not others can be named to the committee as replacements. Swine Flu R. Bachoo noted that we have not had any cases of the Swine (H1N1) Flu on campus and even the number of regular flu cases was low this past season. He also said the administration was careful to put out constructive messages about precautions, such as hand washing, and to not send out messages that would cause undue alarm. Adjournment Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by J. Alicandro and seconded by S. Lesik. The meeting was adjourned at 1 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Laurie G. Dunn Laurie G.
