Motion seconded. Dr. Merenstein announced there would be no policy meeting report and the focus would be on the programming committee for the April 21 forum featuring Ronald Sullivan along with the diversity curriculum. Dr. Retelle building off of that discussed the overview of the forum. Dr. Retelle called the 21st a "work in progress". Dr. Kurt Love announced he met with representatives from the theater department to discuss the idea of doing something such as "Theater of the Oppressed". It was generally discussed that the 21st would be an entire day for diversity. The question was passed around the table "what should we do for the day of diversity?" Dr. Merenstein asked if the theater of the oppressed could be done in the same day with Ron Sullivan. The idea was discussed of doing it are very early beginning between 8: 45 to 9:30 a.m.. Dr. Merenstein raised some concerns about student participation at 8:45 a.m. The question was also passed around then: "how long will we have for breakout sessions?" Dr. Costanza asked about the theater of the oppressed. Dr. Love and Dr. Retelle.discussed the theater of the oppressed thoroughly. Basically the idea is that it is day "rehearsal for life". It was agreed that the theater of the oppressed performance would be a good idea. No motion was put forward however. Dr. Reasco discussed the idea that we need to take a role in ensuring that students will be present. Dr. Reasco will work with EOP to promote the event. Dr. Costanza will solicit some student volunteers from the criminal justice club to help with manual labor and promotion. Dr. Reasco added that Mark McLaughlan might help promote the event to the media. The idea of local high school kids coming was also discussed. No motion was put forward. The idea of student athletes in the athletic department helping was also discussed. Dr. Merenstein began a discussion of curriculum issues. The D-designation has passed the faculty Senate and we have four to five years to get the D-designation rolling. It was announced that within five years the designation should be a general education requirement. The major task at hand will be to get faculty members to submit courses so the committee will have primary examples of what a D-designated course should consist of. Dr. Kurt Love used the "History of Jazz" offered by the Department of Music as an example of how a designated course determination might flow. Questions that should be asked primarily involve the idea of whether or the curriculum of the course looks at human identity. A discussion followed of what was "appropriately intense". Members of the committee seem to agree that the D-designated course should contain a highly intensive content. Dr. Katie Love asked that if medium intensity could be attached to high intensity in terms of examining course designation. There was an agreement that highlights from the diversity workshop program could be useful in determining if course content was appropriate. It was suggested that we bring in our own syllabi as members of the faculty senate diversity committee. The question was discussed of where the selection criteria would come from. Dr. Merenstein said that the curriculum committee can do three tasks at the present moment: assess the condition of certain syllabi, gather syllabi and finally match them up on the basis of which ones should be "conditionally accepted". It was generally agreed that the committee could start with about 10 syllabi, examine them and discuss commonalities. Members of the committee were asked to turn their current syllabi into Dr. Katie Love at HYPERLINK "mailto:lovekal@ccsu.edu" lovekal@ccsu.edu. The idea was discussed that we might be able to acquire some of the best syllabi from those professors who first opposed the designation. Dr. Merenstein discussed our short-term goals: sponsoring programs, incorporating diversity courses into the general curriculum, showcasing our own talent along with our long term goals: which involve creating a mechanism to assess whether or not the committee is having an effect on campus. Dr. Retelle asked about the possibility of doing an online survey. Most of the committee seem to agree that it was a good idea. No motion was put forward however. Dr. Merenstein summed up the meeting by discussing the possibility of asking management for a higher budget next year.
